Introduction to the Island
Maungoodhoo is the southernmost inhabited island in Shaviyani Atoll (Miladhunmadulu Uthuru Buri). The primary occupations of the island's residents are employment in resorts and fishing. Despite the limited land area, the island generates a good income through the allocation of agricultural plots and backyard farming. Notable activities among the women include rope making (coir yarn) and thatch weaving. This island is a "gaamathee" island (an island without a natural lagoon surrounding it). To facilitate the operation of vessels, the loading and unloading of goods, and general docking, the government has constructed a 550-foot by 150-foot harbor on the southern side of the island. Additionally, work is currently underway to develop a modern 800-foot by 250-foot harbor on the western side of the island.
